Common Council President Steve Taylor sent the following e-mail to Franklin's legislators, as well as to State Senator Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee) and State Representative Fred Kessler (D-Milwaukee):
Senator Taylor and Representative Kessler,
I strongly urge you to drop your attempt to force bad legislation upon
the residents of the City of Franklin and upon all of the cities,
villages and towns in Wisconsin. Basically, Senate Bill 548 and
Assembly Bill 759 are an invasion of Home Rule authority granted to us
by the Constitution of the State of Wisconsin.
I ask you what is driving this issue? Nobody in Wisconsin is talking
about this subject matter considering of all the problems that are
facing the State. I am shocked but not surprised that instead of
focusing on the problems facing Wisconsin you are trying to shift the
focus away from your mishandling of state government.
Senator Taylor, it wasn't that long ago the 70% of Milwaukee County
rejected your policy positions but yet you are trying to force a bad
law down our throats. There is a simple solution that all of Wisconsin
residents can live with. Each city, village and town should take back
their own sex offenders when they are released into society. The City
of Franklin have taken back their own under the watchful eyes of the
Franklin Police Department. Our ordinance works and has been upheld in
Circuit Court.
Senate Bill 548 and Assembly Bill 759 are perfect examples of
government at its worst. The citizens of the State of Wisconsin expect
better of you. Instead of trying to null and void a law that works why
don't you get our State out of debt and work to bring jobs to
Wisconsin. It is time to tackle the real issues facing Wisconsin so
please place these two bills in the trash where they belong.
